Pas de version française de l’annonce, ni sur Charity Village, ni sur le site de la SRC où il est écrit : « if you are interested in this position, please submit a one page cover letter in French and your resume by Wednesday, September 5, 2012, to:…».

Et dire que cette Société royale du Canada (SRC) déclare dans sa page d’accueil (http://www.src-rsc.ca/home_fr.php) être une « organisation nationale et bilingue comptant plus de 2 000 membres et plus de 40 membres institutionnels originaires de toutes les provinces » !!! Bilingue, de qui veut-on rire?

Tout le monde sait que le gouvernement fédéral se fout du français imposant l’anglais comme langue de travail sauf pour quelques postes de traducteurs et employés des communications. Mais cette réalité est habituellement cachée. Dans le cas de la SRC, on l’écrit sans gêne. Ils n’ont même pas besoin de préciser que le CV doit être en anglais, tellement c’est évident pour eux!

Les réactions possibles à ce genre de comportement arrogant du fédéral sont nombreuses :

1) On peut s’enflammer et demander une version française de l’annonce et obtenir qu’un responsable de la SRC dise que c’était « une erreur d’un employé » et que « nous sommes très attachés à nos deux langues officielles » etc., etc.

2) On pourrait aussi lancer la serviette, c’est-à-dire abandonner ce combat officiel du bilinguisme et tirer les conclusions de l’inachèvement du rêve trudeauesque, soit que tant que n’aurons pas notre pays, nous ne pourrons pas travailler dans notre langue.

3) Ou choisir les deux!

Nous vous laissons le soin de déterminer si et comment réagir à ce genre d’affront très révélateur d’un nouveau Canada, celui de Harper, qui laisse sa langue dominer sans complexe.

Senior Officer, Communications

13 Month Maternity Contract Ending November 2013

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Officer, Communications is responsible for the operations of the Communications Department, possesses strong media relations and social media savvy and leads all communications strategies to support the organization’s mission, primarily focused on recognizing academic excellence, advising governments and organizations on matters of national interest, and promoting Canadian culture. Operating out of the External Relations Department, this role develops strategies to support all initiatives as outlined in the Society’s Strategic Plan, but also advises and provides support to other parts of the Society’s mission. Leading by example, the Senior Officer, Communications champions the Society`s brand and helps to strengthen RSC visibility using core bilingual resources, leading content development, editing and project management.

Duties and Responsibilities

Publications & Collateral:

  • Oversees the development and execution of all major Society publications (hardcopy and electronic). Ensures that all publication content is received, translated and approved as per the stipulated timelines.
  • Reviews, edits (copy editing), and approves all RSC documentation, collateral etc.
  • Reviews, edits (copy editing), and approves communications about the RSC written by external parties.
  • Oversees the development and execution of all event collateral i.e. posters, programmes, promotional material etc.

 External Communication:

  • Manages all RSC translations. Sends out and receives all translations on behalf of the RSC Secretariat and liaises with the Editor to review the final document.
  • Prepares and distributes press releases, media advisories and communiqués for RSC events and programmes.
  • Ensures the success of all events by communicating and promoting the event.
  • Develops attendance strategies and individualized communications plans for major RSC events and manages successful execution.
  • Promotes and raises awareness of the Royal Society of Canada through traditional and new media.
  • Manages the Society’s Twitter account and tweets on behalf of the organization.
  • Manages and oversees the appropriate execution of all new media tools employed at the Society i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, YouTube, RSS Feeds.
  • Liaises with event sponsors to ensure adequate sponsor service.
  • Oversees the development and execution of the registration website for the Society’s Annual General Meeting and Annual Symposium.

Internal Communication:

  • Develops communiqués to be circulated throughout the Secretariat.
  • Reviews and edits collateral and/or any internally created text as required.

Strategy:

  • Negotiates all communications related supplier contracts to remain on budget.
  • Researches and implements new ways to improve the Communications Department.
  • Develops policies and procedures for the Communications Department and ensures they are adhered to.

Expert Panels:

  • Executes all communication activities related to the dissemination of the Society’s Expert Panel reports as per the “Expert Panel Media Implementation Strategy”.

Website:

  • Manages the Society’s website by doing regular updates to ensure its consistency and accuracy.
  • Manages Google Analytics account to ensure that Society’s goals are being met and adjusts accordingly to reflect the communications plan.
  • Liaises with the Society’s web technology firm as required.

Staff Management Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with the Senior Officer, Events and participates in all RSC events.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled RSC team meetings.
  • Manages the Assistant, Communications through ongoing coaching and development.
  • Performs secretarial duties for the Communications Committee – regularly liaises with Committee members, schedules meetings, take minutes and prepares the November report to Council.

Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience working in a fast-paced, complex communications/marketing, media relations environment; not-for-profit experience is an asset
  • Degree in communications or marketing or directly related field (i.e. commerce, international business, public relations etc.)
  • Fluent bilingualism is essential (French tests will be administered)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing communications plans, including objectives, strategies and tactics
  • Strong organizational, time management, project management, problem-solving, attention to detail and analytical skills
  • A creative self-starter who is comfortable taking initiative and champions progressive change
  • Experience working with senior level officials where strong diplomatic/political skills are required
  • Demonstrated ability to network and build relationships
  • Experience with traditional and new media relations tools
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook)
  • Working knowledge of Eventbrite is an asset
  • Working knowledge of Drupal is an asset
  • Working knowledge of CiviCRM is an asset
  • Willingness to work overtime, if necessary, to meet deadlines and during periods of peak activity
  • Candidate must reside in the National Capital Region
