FRENCH SCHOOL REJECTS ANGLO BASKETBALL COACH

WebPosted Fri Sep 13 16:26:44 2002

DIEPPE, N.B.–A French-language school in New Brunswick is refusing to
hire an English-speaking coach over fears of the cultural assimilation
of the students.

Officials at Mathieu-Martin high school in Dieppe decided against hiring

the experienced girls’ basketball coach, even though the parents
preferred him.

The school decided on a French-speaker instead.

Slowing assimilation

Ernest Thibodeau, the chair of the francophone school district that
includes Mathieu-Martin, said Friday that French-language schools have a
responsibility to slow the assimilation of students into the larger
English-speaking community.

Some parents warned they would transfer their children to an
English-language school in Moncton to play if the anglophone coach was
not hired.

Thibodeau says he hopes parents and students will accept the new coach
picked by the board and stay at the school.
