Montreal, Wednesday June 4, 2008 – Following the launch of its website, Solidarity with Écosociété, the publishing house continues its campaign by organizing a fundraising concert that will be held on June 12 at the Kola Note*, featuring artists who support our cause. Les Zapartistes, Tomás Jensen, Ève Cournoyer, Jérôme Minière, Ivy, Jean-François Lessard, Kumpa’nia et Adama Zon will be sharing the stage starting at 8:30 pm. Novalist Stanley Péan will be hosting.

Following the publication of Noir Canada, Écosociété and its authors were sued for 6 millions $ by Barrick Gold, the world’s largest gold mining company. Facing this SLAPP** and within the context of this legal battle, Écosociété has launched a Solidarity Campaign aimed at helping to fund its defense, and the defense for freedom of expression and the access to information.

This campaign has generated genuine citizen interest. Among others, Maude Barlow, Naomi Klein, la Ligue des droits et libertés, the Council of the Canadians, the Canadian Labour Congress are giving their support. More than 4500 individuals have already signed the petition and 1000 people have written to the Québec Ministre of Justice, to ask the government for anti-SLAPP legislation.

Independent publishing plays a fundamental role in democracy. Écosociété Press refuses to be muzzled and we will continue our work as a socially-committed publisher.
